This is another collaboration with my very talented best friend Manessah B. of the blog: Couch Talks, Wisdom & A Cup of Joe.
REMEMBER ME (A Collaboration)
My star, as you float away I watch you,
noticing the shadows you leave behind
in hands where your light has spent years shining
ever so brightly. I beg Time rewind.
Was it not yesterday that you were born,
created from a dying star still missed?
Left in my hands, I cradled you and mourned.
Your mother star… in you she is living.
Was it not yesterday that your footsteps,
tiny and fragile, walked right behind mine?
With a voice that was so squeaky and small…
Wearing my shoes that could not fit at all.
You wanted everyone to notice
how big you had gotten. You had grown up.
Remember when you played in my makeup,
determined to show me your masterpiece?
Was it not yesterday all your milestones
we celebrated, as I swallowed tears
realizing how your smile lit up a room.
You helped me grow so much over the years.
Even though I see how much you have grown,
you are still that newborn star in the sky.
Except now you have bigger hands and feet
taking on the world with much bigger eyes
seeing a place filled with so many things
I tried to shield your innocent eyes from
when you were young, full of many questions.
But now adulthood arrives and beckons.
I know stars are meant to be seen by all,
but I wish to hold you a bit longer.
It seems that these little, old hands of mine
have held you for what feels like a lifetime.
Though I am certain you are wise and strong,
mature enough to face this world alone,
the most heartbreaking thing I’ll ever do
is loosening the grip I have on you.
So, as we bid farewell, I hope you know
that our hearts will always be connected,
no matter where you go in this big world.
You know where to find me, when I’m needed.
My star, I ask only of you one thing,
while you float away to be in that sky:
Remember me, as you twinkle and grow.
I’ll gaze upon you with pride, as you glow.
